What is a high thyroglobulin level after thyroidectomy?

Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a protein that is produced by the thyroid gland and is used as a marker in the diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid cancer. After a thyroidectomy (surgical removal of the thyroid gland), the Tg level should be very low or undetectable. If the Tg level is high after thyroidectomy, it may indicate residual thyroid tissue or thyroid cancer recurrence. A high Tg level is usually followed by additional tests such as imaging studies (like ultrasound, CT scan, or PET scan), or further treatment, such as radioactive iodine therapy or additional surgery. It is essential to monitor the Tg levels regularly after thyroidectomy to detect any recurrence or persistence of thyroid cancer.
